Project background
Along with the development of the auto industry and improvement of the environmental protection sense, vehicle fuel efficiency and environmental protection have drawn great attention from the government and auto industry. The Chinese government has supported the large-sized Clean Vehicle Action since 1999. Objectives of the action include, through the development and popularization of the fuel efficient technologies, to reduce the dependence on petroleum resources, improve city air quality and help the auto industry become sustainable.
To support the Clean Vehicle Action, the Ministry of Science and Technology organized a group of key projects from 2001 to 2005, focusing on the technical developments of low emissions conventional, alternative fuel and electric vehicles, and initiated a group of demonstration projects.
To handle the obtruding energy and environment problems, the Ministry of Science and Technology initiated in 2006 the Key Fuel Efficient and New Fuel Vehicle Project under the National 863 Program for 2006 to 2010. Prior to the end of 2010, the work will be focusing on developing the key technologies of fuel cell, hybrid, electric, gas and other vehicles; developing the key components and assemblies of fuel cell, power battery, power motor, gas engine and others; researching and establishing the policy, standard and test abilities related to new fuel vehicles; introducing more new fuel vehicles to the market through large-sized demonstrative operations.
